Chang Puak (Chang Phueak), Chiang Mai: Neighborhood Guide
The northern reaches above the Old City’s North Gate — the subdistrict actually stretches well beyond the Superhighway, though the lived-in core sits between the gate and the highway, anchored by Rajabhat University and the bustling Tanin Market. Inside the Superhighway it feels classic urban Chiang Mai: dense, budget-friendly apartments and townhouses, famous Chang Puak Gate food stalls (home of the legendary khao kha moo lady), and the riverside stretch that softens into Chang Moi. North of the Superhighway the density drops, streets widen, and the vibe turns quieter and more residential — still very Thai and local, with fewer expats and almost no moobans. Housing across both zones is refreshingly affordable and best navigated by motorbike. If you want to live as a minority in a genuinely Thai neighborhood rather than an expat bubble, Chang Puak (on either side of the highway) delivers.
